If you are developing your website projects at your local server using XAMPP or other easy to install Apache, Mysql, PHP distribution, and if you want to access your local server anywhere outside your network; this post is for you.
In this tutorial, I am using Linksys Wireless-G Home Router WRH54G which I bought at enigma-phil for Php 1,500.00 6 months ago, and ComClark as my ISP.
1. Using Open Port Check Tool, check if your ISP is blocking port 80. You can use free utility like www.canyouseeme.org to verify if certain port is open or closed. See screenshot below:
2. Once your port 80 is open, launch your browser and type http://192.168.1.1/ on the address bar to access Linksys Wireless-G Home Router Advance Setup .
3. Choose Applications & Gaming -> Port Range Forwarding then Add HTPP Application with start and end port 80 and set protocol to Both. On the IP Address column, put the last 3 digits of your local network IP address then check enable and hit “Save Settings”. See screenshot below:
4. Now that you already setup the Port Range Forwarding of your router, start your XAMPP and test by typing your Internet IP Address (see step 1 to get your internet IP Address or use www.whatismyip.com) ( See screenshot below).
We’re done! If you want to be sure that it works, tell your online friend if they can access your home server by giving them your Internet IP Address (in this case http://111.125.65.195/ ).
Setting up a home server is helpful for a freelancer like me. My client can see the progress of the projects directly on my local server.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
